Rams Win Thriller 1-0 Over Darien For State Title
Olivia Hompe scored on a penalty shot with 1:43 left in the third period and Charlotte Spitzfaden stopped all 20 shots she faced in a thrilling 1-0 victory for the Rams. It was the 4th State Title, in the five years that Connecticut has had a state tournament, for the Rams. It was an exciting back and forth game which saw the Blue Wave and New Canaan finish with 20 shots on goal each. The stellar goaltending of Katherine Macomber and Spitzfaden kept the game deadlocked until the penalty shot was called with 1:43 remaining.
With 2:00 left in the game Olivia Hompe picked up a loose puck just outside the Darien blue line and broke in alone on Macomber. Hompe was dragged down from behind while taking the shot and was awarded a penalty shot. Macomber, who had stopped a penalty shot the night before in the semifinals against Simsbury, came out and challenged Hompe who faked to her left before cutting to the right and scoring the game winner. Aside from New Canaan winning the game, it was the end of a great four years for two of the FCIAC's most outstanding goalies. Macomber, in her four years at Darien has lead them to two FCIAC Title Games and Two State Title games winning one of each. Spitzfaden leaves after playing in four consecutive FCIAC Finals winning two championships and leading the Rams to four consecutive State Title Games winning three championships.. These two along with Addie McKeon from Greenwich will be greatly missed by their teams and the league.
The Rams will sorely miss graduating seniors, Shelby Barada, Maggie Burke, Kelsey Durkin, and Charlotte Spitzfaden who came in as freshman starters and won both and FCIAC and State Titles during a 24-0 season. Now they leave doing the same, winning both titles their senior year during a 23-1 season.
New Canaan finished the year at 23-1 for their sixth 20 plus win season in the past nine years. Congratulations to all of the girls for such a successful season. The dedication and hard work that you have put in for the entire season has paid off in a year to remember.
