The Atlantic Junior Hockey and Metropolitan Junior Hockey Leagues
kicked off their Columbus Weekend Showcase Friday Afternoon. The
Philadelphia Little Flyers and Walpole Express met in the weekends
first MJHL matchup, setting the tone for what has been an exciting
weekend of junior hockey.
T.J. Thornton was outstanding in goal for the Express, stopping 31 of Philadelphias 32 shots as Walpole held off a late rush from an aggressive Little Flyers team for a 2-1 victory.
Kevin Zipkin put the Express on the board halfway through the first period of play with his first tally of the season. On a nice setup from his center, Jack Mulvaney, Zipkin was able to put a shot on net and corral the rebound, chipping it over the outstretched pads of Little Flyers goalie Steve Kelly.
The Express were not done, however, as they took advantage of a power play late in the first. Walpole native Will Harrop took a feed from Matt Bletzer and found the back of the net, sending the Express to the locker room with a 2-0 lead at intermission. Shots in the first were 18-12 in favor of Walpole.
The Little Flyers came out strong in the final period, turning a Walpole turnover in front of the net into a goal on a delayed penalty.
Thornton, however, would not let the Express be denied the victory. He came up with big save after big save, none bigger than his glove save of a Trevor Richmond one-timer with just over a minute remaining.
Walpole (7-1-0-2) outshot Philadelphia (3-3-0-1) 33-32 what was the teams first matchup of the season.
