The fans at the Civic Center were treated to a matchup of No. 66 vs. No. 99 in their prime and flanked by the league's best. |
1986 - The 38th NHL All-Star Game is played in Hartford. Edmonton Oilers coach Glen Sather's Campbell Conference took on the Wales Conference, coached by Flyers bench boss Mike Keenan, in a truly star-studded affair. Gretzky vs. Lemieux, Coffey vs. Bourque, and Messier vs. Bossy were just a few of the individual matchups that made the game so exciting.
The first twenty minutes would play out with no scoring form either side, but the teams traded second period goals from Vancouver Canucks RW Tony Tanti and Flyers RW Brian Popp. The marquee names started scoring in the third, with Quebec Nordiques pivot Peter Stastny giving his team the lead until late in the third, when Gretzky tied things up.
Half-a-minute later, Propp converted with the extra man, only to see the opposition once again respond with a power play goal from Winnipeg Jets center Dale Hawerchuk and just over 40 seconds remaining. Three minutes into overtime, a pair of NY Islanders worked the magic that led to a four-year dynasty a few seasons earlier, as Bossy fed Bryan Trottier for the game-winner and a 4-3 Wales Conference victory.
