Falmouth High School, at 6-0, is doing its best to keep pace with 7-0 Hingham High |
Welcome to the first Weekly Feed Column of 2010. I hope that everyone out there had a great New Year's Celebration. Personally, I was thrilled to be in the middle of the action at the Winter Classic at Fenway Park, an event I will never forget.
The dust is starting to settle in Division 1 after several Holiday tournaments. Hingham High School has asserted itself solidly at the top of the boys' rankings, winning the Ed Taylor tournament with a 5-1 victory over Weymouth. Hingham is now 7-0 on the year, the best record of any division 1 school, and boasts a +25 goal differential. Falmouth, who won the Cape Cod Cup and now sits at 6-0, is the only other public school to remain undefeated, while Malden Catholic, now 4-0, is the only other team to have a perfect record without tie or defeat.
MC improved to that mark with a victory in the Kasabuski Christmas tournament in Saugus, MA. Mike Vecchione scored two goals for the Lancers as they would go on to defeat Austin Prep by a score of 3-2. Austin Prep played well, staying with Malden Catholic for much of the game and twice fighting back from deficits to level the score. The Cougars lost on a spot of bad luck as the game-winning goal deflected in off of the leg of a defenseman. Still, the game should give Austin Prep confidence that they can skate with any team, which will help because Arlington Catholic looms close on their schedule.
St. John's Prep followed their thrashing of St. John's Shrewsbury with a disappointing 2-1 loss to a Woburn team that is making a bid to have another successful season (currently 4-1 on the year). The Prep is looking like they are in a big hole right now, as they must now play consecutive games against BC High and Central Catholic to start their conference schedule, and they already find themselves in a hole against all other teams in the Catholic Conference. The Prep has dropped to 19th in the Division 1 RPI ratings, and strength of schedule will not help them much longer if their record does not improve.
These new shake-ups should definitely see some changes to last week's power rankings. The Prep was barely holding on to the ten spot, but now may find itself out of the mix. Hingham will almost definitely move up from the sixth spot, but how far can an undefeated Malden Catholic fall? Will Falmouth finally get the respect it deserves?
